Farmers initiatives

For Danish pig farmers, the rearing of healthy animals is the essence of pig production. Within a successful pig business, considerate treatment of the animals is a key factor in maintaining high health levels in the herd.

Good stockmanship and understanding of animal behaviour are vital to the welfare of the pigs regardless of the production system employed. All farmers in Denmark must undergo formal training before owning or managing a farm. There is easy access to information regarding good husbandry practices and farmers must ensure that all stockmen and farm workers are fully trained.

Independent audit

Every pig farm in Denmark must be independently audited at least once every three years to ensure full compliance with legislation and industry requirements.

Producers delivering pigs under special contracts, such as the ‘Contract for UK Production’, are subject to an independent audit every year to ensure full compliance with the agreed standards. In addition, five per cent of all Danish pig farms receive an unannounced visit from the District Veterinary Service each year as part of an official government control programme.
